AI 视频 API 按量计费与订阅制谁更便宜:2026 年规模化成本对比
AI Video API Pricing vs Subscriptions in 2026: Which Is Cheaper at Scale
At a few hundred clips a month, a pay-per-second API and a credit subscription cost about the same. Which one is cheaper depends on three things: the plan tier, how many attempts each usable clip takes, and whether a script can reach the subscription at all. Higgsfield, an AI-native creative suite with 35+ models and tools, offers both paths: plan credits reachable from code through MCP and CLI, and a separate Higgsfield API with its own US dollar balance.
Two ways to pay for AI video at scale
Every provider in this article sells generated seconds through one of two billing models, and the model decides how much of your monthly bill is fixed.
Billing model | What you pay for | Where it is sold | What happens when volume grows |
|---|---|---|---|
API, pay per second | Each second of output at a published per-model rate, from a prepaid balance | Runway API, Google Gemini API (Veo), Kling developer platform, Luma API, fal, Higgsfield API | Cost scales linearly; volume discounts apply at some providers |
Credit subscription | A monthly fee that includes a credit allowance; each generation deducts credits by model and settings | Runway, Kling, Luma, Higgsfield website plans | Cost is flat until the allowance runs out, then top-ups are charged |
The practical difference is where the line between fixed and variable cost sits. API spend is entirely variable. A credit plan is fixed up to its allowance, and the price of one credit falls as the tier rises, which is what moves the break-even point.
What 300 clips a month cost by provider
The reference workload used in this article: 300 usable 8-second clips a month, two generations per usable clip, 720p. That is 600 generations and 4,800 seconds of output. The table uses each provider’s current-generation model at 720p, so the rows compare billing terms only. Rates come from each provider’s official pricing page or developer documentation.
Provider | Model | Rate | 4,800 seconds | Technical failure | Usable but rejected output |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Higgsfield API | Kling 3.0 | $0.084 per second | $403.20 | Not charged, refunded to balance | Charged |
Kling developer platform | Kling 3.0 | $0.084 per second (0.6 units at $0.14) | $403.20, from prepaid packages starting at $700 | Not stated on the pricing page | Charged |
fal | Kling 3.0 Standard | $0.084 per second | $403.20 | Not charged, successful outputs only | Charged |
Runway API | Gen-4 Turbo | $0.05 per second (5 credits at $0.01) | $240.00 | Refunded, except input moderation rejections | Charged |
Runway API | Gen-4.5 | $0.12 per second (12 credits at $0.01) | $576.00 | Refunded, except input moderation rejections | Charged |
Google Gemini API | Veo 3.1 Fast | $0.10 per second | $480.00 | Not charged | Charged |
Google Gemini API | Veo 3.1 | $0.40 per second | $1,920.00 | Not charged | Charged |
Luma (credits on the $30 plan) | Ray3.2 | 300 credits per 10-second clip, about $0.90; an 8-second clip is billed as 10 seconds | $540.00 | Refunded | Charged |
Pricing checked on October 13, 2026. US list prices shown before applicable taxes and before launch or top-up discounts. Prices and plan details may change. Luma is shown through plan credits because its per-clip credit table is the published price; its API is billed separately.
Two things the table makes visible. The same model can cost the same per second at three different providers, so the choice between them is about billing mechanics, concurrency and tooling. And the last column matters more than the one before it: technical failures are refunded at most providers, but a clip that rendered correctly and still does not fit the brief is paid for everywhere. Additional generations or alternatives may increase the cost, and at two attempts per usable clip they double it.
What the same clips cost on a Higgsfield subscription
On the Higgsfield website, Kling 3.0 at 8 seconds and 720p costs 16 credits per generation. What a credit costs depends on the plan: Starter is $15 a month for 200 credits, Plus is $49 for 1,000, and Ultra is $129 for 3,000 with a slider up to 9,000.
Plan | Monthly fee | Credits | Price per credit | Kling 3.0 8-second clip | Generations the allowance covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Starter | $15 | 200 | $0.075 | $1.20 | 12 |
Plus | $49 | 1,000 | $0.049 | $0.78 | 62 |
Ultra | $129 | 3,000 | $0.043 | $0.69 | 187 |
The same clip on the Higgsfield API costs $0.67 at the list rate. So the API is cheaper per clip than Starter and Plus, and reaches parity with Ultra. The subscription still wins in two cases: when the plan is already paid for website work and scripting is added on top, and when the generations fit inside the allowance, so the marginal cost of a scripted batch is zero until the credits run out. For plan availability and current credit amounts in your region, check the Higgsfield pricing page.
Break-even at 50, 150, 300 and 1,000 clips a month
The table keeps the same workload (8 seconds, 720p, Kling 3.0, two attempts per usable clip) and shows what each volume needs on both billing models.
Usable clips a month | Generations | API at $0.084 per second | Credits needed at 16 per generation | Plan that covers it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
50 | 100 | $67.20 | 1,600 | Ultra (3,000 credits) |
150 | 300 | $201.60 | 4,800 | Ultra with the slider at 6,000 |
300 | 600 | $403.20 | 9,600 | Above the Ultra maximum of 9,000; top-ups or a team plan |
1,000 | 2,000 | $1,344.00 | 32,000 | Team plans pool up to 37,500 credits a month |
Where each model wins:
- Below roughly 100 generations a month, an Ultra plan costs $129 and covers everything, and the same credits also pay for website tools. The API would cost less for the clips alone, but only if nothing else is generated that month.
- Between 150 and 300 usable clips, the allowance is the limit. One attempt per clip keeps the workload inside Ultra’s slider; two or more push past it, and the API or a pooled team plan takes over.
- Above 1,000 usable clips, the API is the cheaper path if you also need concurrency, a cost estimate before each run and a per-project breakdown.
Multiply by your real attempt rate before deciding. The attempt rate moves most teams across the line more often than the per-second price does.
Where a subscription is reachable from code
Most subscriptions are not reachable from a script. Runway sells API credits separately in its developer portal. Kling sells developer access through prepaid resource packages that sit apart from web membership credits. Luma bills its API separately from plan credits. Google sells Veo only through the Gemini API and Vertex AI. In all four cases, the moment you automate, you pay API rates even if you already pay for a plan.
Higgsfield works differently. Higgsfield MCP and CLI + Skills are how Higgsfield handles integration for people who already have a plan: a script or an AI agent generates on the credits of that plan, with no API key and no second balance.
- Higgsfield MCP at mcp.higgsfield.ai connects Claude, Cursor and any MCP-compatible agent to your account; generations deduct plan credits at the same cost as on the website.
- Higgsfield CLI + Skills installs three skills for coding agents with one command and signs in with your Higgsfield account; billing is the same plan credits.
- Soul Characters trained with Soul ID are available through MCP, so a scripted batch helps keep a consistent face across clips without re-uploading references.
- Supercomputer runs scheduled batches on the same credits, which is the path when the brief changes daily and nobody wants to maintain a script.
One rule applies to every automated path: Unlimited models and Free Generations on plans are accessible only on higgsfield.ai, not through MCP/CLI, Canvas or Supercomputer, so a scripted generation always deducts credits. Parallel generation on the website is also tiered by plan: up to 2 videos at a time on Starter, up to 6 on Plus, and unlimited paid parallel generations on Ultra. Setup details are in How to Generate AI Videos With AI Agents and Credits vs Unlimited.
When you need the API
Higgsfield API is a separate product with its own console at open.higgsfield.ai, its own prepaid US dollar balance and 35+ models and tools under one key. Plan credits and API balance do not mix, and neither can be transferred into the other. The API is the right choice in four situations:
- You are shipping your own product. Users of your app generate through your key, and you need per-project keys, team workspaces that share one balance and one invoice, and analytics by day, model and workflow.
- You need concurrency. API concurrency is tiered by funds added in the last 28 days: 2 concurrent requests below $25, 10 from $25, 20 from $100 and 40 from $1,000, with higher limits through sales. For comparison, Runway’s API moves from 1 concurrent video generation to 20 across five tiers that unlock at $50, $100, $1,000 and $5,000 purchased; Kling includes 20 concurrent requests with every prepaid package; fal starts Kling 3.0 endpoints at 1 concurrent request per user, with higher limits on request.
- You want to know the cost before you run. The estimate endpoint returns the price of a request with the same parameters before you submit it, so a batch can be budgeted before it runs.
- You want failures to cost nothing. Requests that end as failed or moderated are not charged, and any reserved amount is refunded automatically.
Billing runs per second of video output and per image, with a few per-generation exceptions. New models land in the API on release day on the same endpoint. Outputs stay available for at least 7 days, so storing results is part of the integration. The flow is three calls: submit, poll the status URL, fetch the file, which is also why teams moving from fal or Replicate typically change one key and keep their pipeline. Generate AI Videos From the Higgsfield API covers the first request end to end.
Provider notes: Runway, Veo, Kling, Luma, fal
Runway API bills in API credits at $0.01 each, bought in the developer portal per project, with Gen-4 Turbo at 5 credits per second and Gen-4.5 at 12. ProRes and HDR output add per-second surcharges. Concurrency and daily generation caps rise through five usage tiers.
Google Veo 3.1 is sold per second through the Gemini API and Vertex AI with no free tier: Lite at $0.05 per second for 720p, Fast at $0.10 for 720p and $0.12 for 1080p, and the standard model at $0.40 for 720p or 1080p. Clips are capped at 8 seconds. There is no subscription path for developers.
Kling’s developer platform prices Kling 3.0 at 0.6 units per second for 720p and 0.8 for 1080p, with a unit listed at $0.14, so $0.084 and $0.112 per second. Access is sold as prepaid resource packages from $700 for 5,000 units, valid 180 days with no rollover, each with 20 concurrent requests. Web membership credits are not usable on the API.
Luma prices Ray3.2 in credits per clip: 100 credits for 5 seconds and 300 for 10 seconds at 720p, four times that at 1080p, with HDR at two times and HDR plus EXR at three times the base rate. Plans start at $30 a month for 10,000 credits, so a 10-second 720p clip is about $0.90 on the entry plan. Credits used for failed generations are returned automatically. The API is billed separately from plan credits.
fal lists 1000+ endpoints under one key and bills per second with no minimum, with Kling 3.0 Standard at $0.084 per second and Pro at $0.112. Rates match the official Kling API for this model, so the choice between fal and the model vendor is about catalog breadth and tooling, and the same applies to Higgsfield API, which adds Soul ID, Genjutsu and Marketing Studio on the same key.
